Indian Island

Located along 39A Union Street in Calais, Maine, the Indian Island school district is an active, traditional public school system serving a rural remote community in eastern Maine. Operating independently outside of a supervisory union, this non-charter district is structured to offer educational programming spanning pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Set within a distinct geographic landscape, the district provides a dedicated and focused educational setting designed to serve local families with tailored academic opportunities and community-centered learning.

The district fosters a close-knit environment, currently educating a student body of 89 children across the pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade levels. Deeply rooted in its surrounding community, the student population predominantly identifies as American Indian, giving the district a distinct and cohesive cultural identity. A defining element of the district is its exceptional level of instructional and operational support; with 36 full-time equivalent teachers, more than six instructional aides, and over 41 support staff members—bringing total staffing to approximately 84 full-time equivalent positions—the district maintains a remarkably low student-to-staff ratio.
