W-A-Y Academy

W-A-Y Academy is an active, independent public charter school district headquartered at 8701 W. Vernor Highway in Detroit, Michigan. Operating within the large city environment of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metropolitan area, the district manages two school facilities tailored specifically to middle and high school students across grades 6 through 12. Designed to foster academic growth and prepare adolescents for post-secondary success, W-A-Y Academy provides a targeted secondary education framework within the local community, serving as its own local educational agency for state and federal programs.

For the 2024–2025 academic year, the district serves a student body of 211 enrolled learners, with its highest grade concentrations in the early high school years. The student population reflects a rich cultural diversity, comprising 127 Hispanic students, 76 Black students, and 8 White students, distributed evenly between 109 male and 102 female learners. To support this community, the district maintains a dedicated multidisciplinary team totaling over 38 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff members. This includes approximately 11 FTE instructional teachers and 2 FTE instructional aides, backed by a strong support staff of over 25 FTE personnel who provide essential administrative, operational, and student-centered services.
